Valladolid
Valladolid oozes history from every ancient stone. King Felipe II was born here; the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabel, married here; and Christopher Columbus died here. Once the capital of Spain, it’s now the principal city of Castilla y Leon, the land of castles from which the word ‘Castilian’ derives. Today, Valladolid is a bustling university city that thrives on its manufacturing industries. It’s a down-to-earth, lively place that energetically blends old with new.
The City
Valladolid may revel in its ancient monuments, but it’s a thoroughly modern city. Indeed, it’s this seamless blend of present and past that gives the city its rich character: the Museum of Modern Art resides in the cloisters of an ancient monastery, restaurants serve high-class, contemporary cuisine in sixteenth-century constructions, and students dance to high-tech beats in nightclubs on Valladolid’s historic streets.
When the activity gets too much, it’s a great place for relaxing, too. The city’s located on the banks of the Pisuerga River, and it has capitalized on its waterfront location by creating an urban riverside beach. If green grass is more your thing, the popular Campo Grande is the place to go for a Sunday-afternoon stroll.
Then, of course, there’s the culture. Valladolid is home to top museums, superb theatre and opera, and beautifully restored architecture of bygone times. And if language-learning is your aim, they say that the Spanish spoken in Valladolid is the most pure in all the land. Read more about Valladolid:
