Karlsruhe
A young metropolis on the Rhine river, Karlsruhe is at the heart of Europe, a mere half hour drive from France and right at the foot of the beautiful Black Forest. The locals savour life, taking time to enjoy local beer and wine and fresh food with their friends and family. And having some of the most fair weather in Germany, it is the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend break, long walks and hearty meals.
The City
According to lore, German nobleman Margrave Karl Wilhelm once nodded off under a tree during a hunting trip and had a dream about a city shaped like a star, with a grand palace forming the centre of the star. Soon after - about 300 years ago - he created the City of Karlsruhe. This luscious green city tucked away in the woods is now known as the Fächerstadt, or "fan city", for its unique pattern. Nestled on the banks of the Rhine river, it offers easy access to the Black Forest, Alsace and the Pfalz region. Though founded much later than its medieval cousins the city abounds with local history and culture. The tree-lined boulevards, the baroque palace and the palace gardens invite visitors to go for long afternoon strolls. And while most of Germany is known for its dreary weather, Karlsruhe gets lots of sunshine and mild temperatures because it is only 115 metres above sea level and is sheltered by mountains to the east and west. The city offers a mixed crowd of students, lawyers and legal aids working at Germany’s federal supreme court and the federal constitutional court, and young tech professionals working for a number of tech companies located right outside of the city. And tourists, of course. Read more about Karlsruhe:
