Szimpla Kert

You have heard anything about Budapest's Ruin bars, then the name Szimpla Kert has probably already arisen. It is the first and the best known. It created the archetype of the busy-but -relaxed bar in the heart of downtown Budapest, by making use of a building that might have otherwise remained unused. With mismatched furniture, wacky decor, cheap beer and a loyal regular crowd, this place soared in popularity and spawned a host of similar operations that became the ruin bars. Szimpla is still going stong in Kazinczy Street, now with an excellent farmers' market held on the weekends, a café and sister bars in berlin and Vác.

This artistic bar was originally opened in 2005 in Tűzoltó (Fireman) Street. It has kept the name, thoug the location has shifted to a disused elementary school and its sizeable courtyard. It is an artist collective, studio and exhibition space, aimed at providing a relaxed communal space fopr like-minded creative idividuals. It is also a popular bar, and nightclub, but an odd one full of artistic-types, who drift down from the studios upstairs. With its artisitic crew, there is no shortage of unique decor, even though the place covers a huge 5300 square metre area, which makes it fun to explore of an evening. There are scores of musical events, book-readings, clothes swaps, and regular sessions, such as informal Hungarian lessons for foreigners every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
