9.- 11.8.2013 -The Wedding-
On Valentine’s Day, the 14th February 1613, Frederick V of the House of Wittelsbach and the English king’s daughter Elizabeth Stuart got married in London at the age of 16. In the same year, they left England by ship and traveled over Den Haag, where Frederick visited his uncle Moritz of Orange, to Heidelberg. Frederick's return home with his bride was an event of international standing at the time. The couple was welcomed by the cheering population of Heidelberg and a celebration of several days’ duration took place at the Heidelberg Castle, which also included a huge fireworks display. This is the starting signal for today’s illuminations of Heidelberg Castle.
In honour of Frederick V and Elizabeth, the City of Heidelberg reminds of this historical marriage with great Jubilee celebrations after 400 years, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and brings back the courtly brilliance of times past to the Neckar.
On the weekend of the 9th-11th August 2013, the guests will be treated to an exciting Jubilee programme: a boat parade, a rowing regatta, the triumphal entry of the bride and groom, fireworks and much more. Throughout the whole year, Heidelberg Marketing GmbH itself will be offering an attractive tour package for foreign guests and a special THE WEDDING guided tour of the Heidelberg Castle: On a walk around the Castle grounds and gardens, participants will find out what was going on 400 years ago, both in public and behind the scenes.
